Further details and background information on Polish flats
and Polish apartments:
Polish flats and apartments are abundant
within many Polish cities and towns as most people live in
this type of accommodation and are used to this style of
living. Blocks of flats may be modern or older stock built
during the communist era, but much of Poland was destroyed
during the second world war so its only the towns and
cities that escaped mass destruction like Krakow for
example, which still have any sizeable stock of older
apartment buildings.
Post war rebuilding threw up many drab, grey looking blocks
for the working-class which may not always appeal but as in
most cases this will be reflected in the property price and
of course, its location. There is still a lot of social
housing and housing type associations where you may own
your own flat but have to pay a monthly community charge
for maintenance, repairs and upkeep of communal areas, and
maybe even for the provision of energy supplies like hot
water, in some older blocks.
Within many of the major cities like its capital Warsaw you
will find many more modern apartments within all price
ranges and degrees of finish, with all the 'mod cons', and
possibly gated for added security. There are many new
developments all over Warsaw as it expands and it just
depends on what you are looking for and your budget.
(over 16,000 apartments
were under construction in Warsaw at the end of 2004).
You
might want a city centre flat in somewhere like Warsaw and
be close to all the facilities on offer or soak up the old
architechture in a historical place like Krakow, or maybe
an apartment near a popular ski resort like Zakopane in the
south. If you want a central location in a place like
Krakow it will most likely be in an older renovated block
or 'kamienica'.
